Our neighbors to the North have once again surpassed us. They are holding a bicycle and pedestrian conference in mid-October:
Moving Together 2008. Bicycling and walking are becoming increasingly visible and important across the country as well as across the Commonwealth. Our invited keynote speaker, Gabe Rousseau, Ph.D, National Bicycle and Pedestrian Program Manager for the Federal Highway Administration, will provide his timely perspective on current initiatives and trends. Based in Washington DC, Rousseau draws upon his extensive experience with the Federal government as well as work with the States. Moving Together’s workshops and exhibits feature up-to-date information that help you to improve bicycling and walking conditions locally, regionally and statewide.
The $40 conference registration fee includes a continental breakfast, refreshments, lunch, and conference materials. For registration information contact: Baystate Roads Program, tel: (413) 545-2604, or register on-line. Please note that registration is limited, so register early to secure your place.
Sue Barker suggests we might want to consider joining together for a group ride to the event, any takers?

Here’s a message from the Friends of India Point Park (FIPP).
For those of you who live in Providence or know the importance to cyclists of this central travel connection, this is an important meeting. Even if you don’t choose to comment, large numbers of bike and pedestrian folks at these meetings sends an important message to the decision makers and elected officials who hold these meeting.
FIPP is planning a meeting at which RIDOT officials will discuss the India Point Park pedestrian bridge and related topics with the community. The date is September 24, Wednesday, at 7PM, at the Sheldon Street Church in Providence. All interested parties are encouraged to attend.

The Watuppa Bicycle and Recreation Path, the first part of the Fall River Bikeway, will open formally on August 20th at 12:30 p.m. in a ribbon cutting ceremony. “Mayor Robert Correia and StateRepresentative Michael Rodrigues will jointly cut the ribbon on the Watuppa shoreline”, announced Rev. James Hornsby, organizer for the event.
“The goal of the event is to alert the general public to the new path, which runs from the Westport line (near Lepage’s) on Route 6 to Brayton Avenue, near where the Quequechan River begins. We are happy that our elected officials are coming, and we expect the path to become popular.”

*PROVIDENCE -* Mayor David N. Cicilline and Councilman Cliff Wood will join residents to celebrate the addition of a new bike lane along Blackstone Boulevard on Thursday, July 17 at 1.pm. near Lippitt Park (at the intersection of Blackstone and Hope Street).
The Mayor will also join cyclists for the inaugural bike ride along Blackstone following the news conference. The two-mile bike lane will eventually link to the Blackstone River Bikeway and the East Bay Bike Path and is part of an ongoing effort to make Providence a more bike-friendly city.

The Green Grease Monkeys from Boston will be doing their second conversion demo on July 26 at Circle A Cycles, 523 Charles St, from 9-5. They’ll be converting a VW Jetta TDI, and the cost is $50 per person, half of which goes to Recycle A Bike.
I think they ask that we all bring something for a lunch potluck. We’ll provide the espresso. Folks can contact me for more info, or sign up with Patrick directly at

From Barry Schiller off the advocacy list:
Reminder that on Thursday, June 26 at 1pm and at 6:30pm in Room 300 of DEM (off Promenade St just west of I-95 in Providence) there are public hearings on both the 4-year Transporation Impriovement program (TIP) and the long-term Transportation 2030 plan. I hope some wil speak for both the bike paths and for on-road bicycling.
My take on the draft is that it puts most of the bike program (except for Congressional earmarks that cannot be used for anything else) on hold. Thus finishing the Blackstone, and bike paths/routes in Tiverton, Cranston, Jamestown, North Smithfield, Charlestown, Warwick and East Greenwich are all put off for the indefinite future after 2012. Once the earmarks are finished and Providence finally does the share-the-road signing and some striping, there will be no (Federally supported) bike program scheduled.

The American Public Transportation Association is organizing the third annual Dump the Pump Day tomorrow.
Join in celebrating the Third Annual National Dump the Pump Day on Thursday, June 19, 2008..
The day is dedicated to raising awareness that riding public transportation helps improve the environment and conserves fuel. It also offers the opportunity for people to beat the high price of gasoline and support public transportation as an important travel option that helps reduce our dependence on foreign oil as well as reducing the amount of harmful greenhouse gases that are emitted into our environment.
On June 19, public transportation agencies from coast to coast will join together to ask you to park your cars and ride public transportation instead.
So get on board and Dump the Pump.
We can do one better than that, avoid the pump all together. Don’t rely on fuel powered vehicles, ride your bike! Yet another motivational reason to get out and try bike commuting, what are you waiting for?
